This research presents the melting of permafrost, a permanently frozen layer of soil in the Arctic and subarctic regions that has become a growing concern for the scientific community due to rising global temperatures caused by human activities. Here we show how this process triggers a series of impacts, both locally and on a planetary scale, releasing large quantities of greenhouse gases stored for long periods of time, such as carbon dioxide and methane, contributing to global warming in a positive feedback loop. Furthermore, melting permafrost also causes instability in infrastructure with disruptions that can lead to significant economic and social consequences for local communities, threatening wildlife and fragile ecosystems in these areas. It is essential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in all sectors, adopt adaptation measures to protect vulnerable infrastructure and ecosystems, and
promote continued research on this topic to effectively address the challenges posed by melting permafrost.
