Abstract

This research project aims to determine the tropospheric radio attenuation due to rainfall, which is the factor that most affects the signals that are transmitted at frequencies above 10Gh. Prediction methodologies exist that are able to estimate the attenuation at any point on the planet. For this study the radio attenuation of two cities of Colombia was analyzed, Medellin and Bogota. Rainfall data used in this research were provided by the IDEAM (Instituto de Hidrología, Meteorología y Estudios Ambientales de Colombia) and processed with software developed by MatLab, the calculation of attenuation was based on ITU Recommendation 618-9. The study is Ex Post Facto, predictive and not experimental. For the development of this research was done following these steps: gathering and validation of rainfall data, collection and processing of rainfall records provided by the IDEAM, application and analysis of prognostic method ARIMA. In the second phase, the results obtained by the forecasting method were evaluated. Similarly, the results were summarized in tables and graphs and finally it was determined the tropospheric radio attenuation forecast by the calculation of the annual radio attenuation after predicted rainfall intensities for different frequencies.
